The Oregon State Senate passed the House Bill 3141 on June 27th, 2007. The margin was 28 to 1. This bill included a minimum minute requirement for Physical Education in schools. The purpose of this bill is to fight the rising levels of obesity among Oregon's children. "Today Oregon took a strong step toward fighting an epidemic," said Senator Peter Courtney. "The return of physical activity to our classrooms will lead to healthier bodies and healthier minds for our children."
HB 3141 will require 150 minutes of Physical Education a week for grades K-5 and 225 minutes for grades 6-8. This bill will also provide $860,000 for a Department of Education grant program to assist school districts in hiring new Phys Ed. teachers and training current staff.
My question to this is if this bill is only directed toward K-8, what plan is there for the High School grades?
