California Physical Education as Risk!

I received this e-mail today, forwarded by the Chair of my department. Please Read and Help!

California Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance

CAHPERD ACTION ALERT

YOUR IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED !

Governor Schwarzenegger has ordered the Legislature into Special Session to address the state budget crisis. On Friday, February 15th they passed a bill to cut the $41 million Physical Education Teacher Incentive Program Grant from this year's budget. Those funds now will be taken from the school districts who received them. Funding for physical education in the 2008-09 budget is at significant risk and WE must take action NOW !

What should I do ?

1. Contact both your Senator and Assembly member and tell them how
you want them to represent YOU in the decision making process. Send a letter, an email, or call their office. Find your Senator and/or Assembly Member by clicking here: www.legislature.ca.gov/

What do I write in my letter ?

1. The three main points are as follows:

a. The Physical Education Teacher Incentive Program must be maintained in the budget because of the important infrastructure it builds in our K-12 physical education programs.

b. This program has long-term education and financial benefits. Active

Californian's are healthy and save our state money.

c. We oppose any language that permits local school districts to use these funds for any other purpose.

2. You can find a sample letter on the CAHPERD website www.cahperd.org.

Look for the "Action Alert" in the upper right corner.

What else should I do ?

1. Ask at least 5 friends, neighbors, family members, or colleagues to do the same. Give them the information they need and provide important points so the task is simple for them and they can get it completed immediately.

2. Call at least 5 physical educators that you know and ask if they got this action alert. Share the information with them and ask them to follow all of the action steps.

We need thousands of responses to get to Sacramento

in the next 24 hours if we are to save our funds.

PLEASE TAKE ACTION NOW !

This is a professional priority for California's Physical Educators !

Out with the Old and In with the New!

I recently read an article written by Linda Strean titled, "What's new in Physical Education?" It was very interesting because it showed that people are finally starting to pin-point and realize the place where all children's health problems are starting; Elementary school. She talks about how many elementary schools are still competition phase with activities such as dodge ball and yearly fitness testing. However, a number of schools are beginning to reinvent their programs.

Strean writes that there is quite a shift beginning to happen from within the Physical Education Realm. While some schools are putting recess on lock down and cramming more academic classes into the time allotted, schools who are implementing new PE are having students participate in a program that their parents wouldn't even recognize.

Previously said, elementary school is when the foundational learning takes place. I see too many kids today that struggle with simple and basic movements. This is due to fact that they were never taught correctly...or even at all. Elementary school is when we need to be teaching children basic movements and skills and making sure that these children have the opportunity to develop them in a wide variety of activities. Jacalyn Lind, President of the National Physical Education Teachers Organization, quoted, "Somewhere throughout the school year, children should feel there's an activity they're successful at."

Now what does this look like; what do we need to so this can happen? Instead of larger groups with small amounts of equipment, we need to lower the equipment-to-student ratio. This will then give the opportunity for more skill-development for more students.

So what does the old and new PE look like? Old PE takes the form of yearly fitness tests, little conditioning in relation to personal goals, and competitive atmospheres where performance is tied to awards and public acknowledgment. New PE takes the shape of helping children learn and understand how and why physical fitness is important, teaches correct motor skills, and how to enjoy physical fitness. This system allows children to set personal goal that are reasonable for them to accomplish.

The nice aspect about this article is that at the end, parent were able to respond to the article; with their personal experiences with their kids and school programs. Here is the site to read their comments:

Can P.E. Class Really Make a Difference in Children’s Fitness?

I came across this article that brought up an interesting question as well as valid points for a solution. This article talks about how some children only receive physical activity in there programs at school. This article goes on to talk about how Exercise Science Professors are teaching the future Physical Educator to have time management in the classroom so that physical activity can be maximized.
